Diversity I have one student with cerebral palsy and his hand is limited when it comes to some fine motor skills. All of his work must be scanned and placed on a flash drive in order for him to use the computer. He does everything on the computer. He is very bright and can do all of the work without any help. So for this unit, I have made sure that all of the graphic organizers are scanned on his flash drive. He also has access to Microsoft Word for typing purposes. He can participate in the experiment and research as long as he types his notes on the computer. He has a laptop and our school is wireless so he has access to research at all times. He is very good with technology so he’ll be able to show his group how to record a Podcast. Some of my other students have reading disabilities, so I will make sure that he/she is in the group with a patient high achieving student that does well in reading.
My English Language Learners will use peer interpreters and the graphic organizers. They can use the same graphic organizers that the rest of the class will with some direction. Students will be engaged in authentic concrete activities throughout the project which ELL students need to help provide understanding of the task. ELL students will not be working by themselves, but as a small group. There will be a lot of oral questioning and answering provided by me as I facilitate the project. All cultural differences will be embraced in my classroom.
All learning styles will be addressed in the unit as well as different intelligences. Each group will be up moving around the room as they experiment with clean-up solutions. Each group will be mixed with varying levels of intelligences from low, medium, to high. Each student will bring his/her own strength to the table for a successful group and project.
Students that do not have access to technology in the home will complete all necessary work at school. If I see that there is a need, I will hold research sessions before school for students that do not have access to a computer at home. If students need it, I will also offer them more time. Since students are working as a group, they will have to divide the work accordingly if one student does not have access to a computer.
Gifted students will be allowed to be creative throughout the unit. They will also be able to accelerate through it and work at their own pace. At my school, gifted students are grouped together in one class. So this makes it easier for me as a classroom teacher to extend the lessons as I see fit. Students will be able to choose which multimedia they would like to use based on which one best fits their project and results. When presenting, groups will explain why they chose that particular multimedia instead of any others.
